The Power of Play Webinar

Play is one of the easiest ways to practice skills critical to employability like teamwork, observation, communication, critical thinking and problem solving. Literacy Link South Central supported the Workforce Planning and Development Board (Elgin, Middlesex, Oxord) with a live webinar on The Power of Play in December 2020.

Game Changer for Soft Skills Development (2019-2020)

Built in a modular fashion to allow for maximum flexibility, these modules provide training on real-world skills that can be developed and practiced in a game-based environment. Using a combination of facilitated lessons, participatory activities, research, and games, these modules can be run as one large course, or individual modules can be delivered based on the needs of the audience.

If you are combining the Game Changer modules into one large course, we recommend you start with Gaming is Good to set the stage for play-based learning and why it is effective. Support Documents are available to provide an outline of what the term "soft skills" refers to, and help participants track their progress through all 10 soft skills modules.

Soft Skills modules include:

Research Related to Gamification

In 2017, the report "Using Gamification in LBS and Beyond", along with the French language translation of the report's executive summary, was released.

Maker Modules (2014)

Through a 2014 Job Creation Partnership project, LLSC developed modules to encourage literacy learners to experiment with innovative technology in a hands-on environment.

Innov-8

LLSC's Innov-8 project teaches key literacy concepts using technically-innovative and physically challenging 94Fifty SMART basketballs. Gamification takes centre stage (or "centre court" in this case!) as learners are taken through not only basketball drills to improve their skills, but also the learning and application of mathematical concepts through the calculation of angles and speeds, and tracking individual and squad stats.

Update: We regret to share that 94Fifty, the maker of the smart basketball used in this curriculum, filed for bankruptcy in 2016. As of 2019, the app used to track the smart basketball was removed, and previously updated versions have stopped working. We will continue to share this curriculum and will investigate alternate technology to deliver literacy and essential skills training through basketball in the future.
