Stories

LLSC is committed to providing exceptional service to our members, stakeholders, and community. Here are some of the stories of the success of our programs and services.

Success Story

The MakerBus

"Five years ago, I (along with two partners) wanted to help expand access to technology and education in my community. I approached Literacy Link South Central with the idea of using emerging technologies to help engage youth in literacy education. The LLSC team provided us with mentorship, feedback, and funding to help us develop our ideas into a reality. Working with the LLSC team has forever changed how I view literacy education."

Success Story

Carrie

Through Ontario Works, Carrie enrolled in our program in September 2017, with the goal of being accepted into an Early Childhood Education program by September 2018.

In order to reach that goal, Carrie was required to obtain her ACE Communications and ACE Math credits. While she was enrolled in her ACE Communications course, Carrie took advantage of the opportunities presented to her, and completed multiple workshops.

She completed Cash Register training, Intro to Trades, and has received her Smart Serve certification. She completed her ACE Communications course in December 2017. Carrie began her ACE Math course in January 2018, and will be participating in a bookkeeping workshop in March 2018.

All of her hard work and dedication has paid off – Carrie recently found out that she has been accepted into Fanshawe’s ECE program for September 2018. Way to go, Carrie!

Success Story

Maria

Maria grew up in a culture that did not value education. Education was considered a waste of time. Work was what was valued and children were expected to contribute to the family. Maria was only in Grade 5 when her family returned to Mexico, and the cycle of moving back and forth between Canada and Mexico looking for farm work began. During these years Maria did not attend school at all and first came to our program in 2010 at the age of twenty-one. What little she had learned as a child was long gone. She had to begin with the very basics, a formidable task for an adult, but Maria was very determined and did not let it deter her. She came to class every day motivated to learn and accept new challenges. Over the years Maria’s writing skills improved dramatically and she graduated from learning to write a complete sentence to writing letters to the editor regarding the potential location of new library in Aylmer. Through sheer perseverance she mastered addition, subtraction, multiplication and division and then went on to conquer fractions, decimals, per cents, algebra, and geometry.

Maria’s goal of getting her GED was getting closer and that spurred her on to work even harder. She asked for homework to complete over the summer. Maria came to the empty class almost every day for two summers in a row and completed page after page of work. This past October the time had come for Maria to write her GED. Maria continued to review her work as she anxiously awaited the day. She had never written an exam before and courageously fought her fears as the day approached. The wait for the results was even more excruciating for her. The day the results came in she came rushing back to the classroom, too afraid to open the envelope on her own. Maria had passed! After seven years of hard work and commitment, Maria had her GED - a truly phenomenal accomplishment!
