Jeff McKerracher is an Owner and Partner at A1 Plumbing. While his father was a plumber and ran a small business, Jeff began his career differently. He worked as a Child and Youth Worker for six years in supportive housing in Kingston, Ontario. Although Jeff liked mentoring young people, he realized that he wanted to become an entrepreneur. He returned to Trenton to work with his brother and business partner Nathan, and together they took over A1 Plumbing from their father in 2019.

Featured Employer:
Jeff McKerracher, A1 Plumbing
A1 Plumbing attracts talent through its strong culture and Jeff’s background as a youth worker. His empathy helps ease newcomers into what can be an intimidating industry.
The company actively recruits apprentices with little or no experience, prioritizing attitude and curiosity over credentials. “We’ve hired a lot of people who were just interested in the trades,” Jeff says, adding that A1 invests in those who show up with energy and a willingness to learn. Mentorship is central to this approach, reflecting Jeff’s commitment to guiding young people and building a team focused on customer service and community.
A1 seeks people who value continuous learning and professionalism. They look for hardworking, self-motivated individuals who communicate well and embrace growth in both technical and soft skills. “We’ve hired people who show up ready to work with good energy and communication,” Jeff says. Many apprentices have joined A1 simply by demonstrating initiative and asking for a chance.
At A1, apprentices rotate through different roles to gain technical and customer service skills. They learn math, hands-on plumbing, and communication by working closely with technicians across the business who mentor them. Continuous improvement is expected for all staff, supported by training and an inclusive culture. Jeff ensures apprentices receive trade school support and acknowledges that they may face challenges, including learning disabilities. His advice: show up curious and engaged every day. A1 retains staff by fostering growth through competitive pay, benefits, and ongoing training. Weekly sessions focus on communication and self-improvement, ensuring employees feel valued through both compensation and development.
Jeff views plumbing as more than technical work—it’s about service, communication, and professionalism. He aims to maintain A1 as a respected community fixture and elevate the plumbing trade as a tech-savvy, customer-focused profession. Looking ahead, Jeff is committed to setting higher standards and inspiring future generations to see trades as dynamic, rewarding careers.
