Literacy Link South Central definition of literacy:
Literacy is the ability to recognize, acquire and apply knowledge. It constitutes the wide range of skills necessary for improving one's quality of life.
Is literacy an issue?
Both the IALS (1994) and the follow-up Adult Learning and Lifeskills Survey (ALLS-2003), found that almost half of all Canadians have difficulty with everyday literacy tasks.
Literacy and Essential Skills programming:
- is basic education for adults in the area of reading, writing and numeracy
- includes basic education in speaking/listening, computer and self-management/self-direction skills
- has 5 levels for each of these above areas
- includes 4 streams: Anglophone (English), Francophone, Native and Deaf
